SHOWCOMOTION CHILDREN’S MEDIA CONFERENCE
International Screenwriters' Festival
Renowned fantasy writer and creator of the Discworld novels, Terry Pratchett,
together with director, Vadim Jean, Leon the Pig Farmer, will be joining the
Screenwriters' Festival in July to talk about their recent collaboration on 'The
Colour of Magic' for Sky, having both worked together on last year's Sky production
of 'The Hogfather'. They have been added to the high profile line up of speakers at
this year's International Screenwriters' Festival to be held in Cheltenham, UK
during 1-3rd July 2008. The Festival's sponsors include South West Screen,
Cheltenham Council, Sky, UK Film Council, Skillset and C4.
With close to 1000 entries for the SWF's popular pitch scheme 'A Pitch in Time' in
association with 4Talent has now closed for entries and the successful short list
will be made public on 17th march.
David Pearson. Producer at Arturi Films, and the festival's Director and founder
said that, " Once again we are impressed at the high standard of entries and we look
forward to a lively pitch session as the Festival. Interest in screenwriting and its
role in the value chain of film and TV making continue to be in the ascendency".
The festival's delegate tickets are on sale this week and the first 50 sold will
have a discounted price of £300 for the packed three days of events (normal price
for three day pass £330).
Previously announced speakers include Jane Tranter Controller of BBC Fiction, who
runs the BBC Drama group including BBC Films, together with Oscar winners Julian
Fellowes Young Victoria & Gosford Park, Guillermo Del Toro 'Pan's Labyrinth' and
'Hellboy II', along with Lucy Prebble 'Secret Diary Of A Call Girl', Deborah
Moggach 'Pride and Prejudice' ,Peter Kosminsky 'The Government Inspector' and
'Britz' , Laura Mackie Director Of Drama ITV.
Kay Mellor 'The Chase', 'Fat Friends' and 'Band Of Gold' and a return of leading
psychiatrist Dr Raj Persaud who will explore at how writers overcome the mental
challenges facing them to make great films.

Images of Black Women
Images of Black Women(IBW) will hold its annual Emerging Filmmaker Award: short
film competition winners' showcasing eclectic and thought provoking topics such as
Darfur, Child Neglect & Afro hair. There will be a short preview of "Afro-Saxon" a
brand new feature from UK director Rachel Wang. As part of the Children's Corner
tradition, IBW will feature a richly entertaining children's programme.

2008 TIBURON INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Tiburon, CA – The 2008 Tiburon International Film Festival (TIFF) is set for March
13 – 21, 2008. TIFF will be showcasing over 225 films from 94 countries.
The Opening Night Film & Gala is scheduled for March 13, 2008. The Opening Night
Film of the 2008 Tiburon International Film Festival is Twins for President, a
comedy from Spain directed by Miguel Angel Calvo Buttini (starring Andoni Gracia,
Txema Blasco, María Galiana, Merce Llorens, Teresa Gimpera). Twins for President
will be making its US Premiere that evening. Miguel Angel Calvo Buttini will be
present for the screening and available after the film to answer questions. The
film will be presented at the Playhouse Theater beginning at 7pm.
The Opening Night Gala (March 13, 2008) is a formal event, which will be held at
the Corinthian Yacht Club, beginning at 8:30pm. The evening will include
filmmakers, international cuisine and live entertainment.
2008 Tributes & Films: The Great American Actor John Wayne, The Searchers (March
16, 2008 @ 4:45pm); Director, Bob Rafelson (One of the Kings of Independent
Films), Five East Pieces (March 14, 2008 @ 7:25pm); and The Great Comedy Director,
Blake Edwards, The Pink Panther Strikes Again (March 15, 2008 @ 5:00pm). Members
of John Wayne’s Family, Bob Rafelson, and Blake Edwards will be present.
Special Programs: Hal Hickel, Academy Award winning visual effects animator, will
have a Special Presentation on the Pirates of the Caribbean series, and how the
visual effects create a new and illusion world for the audiences. There will also
be two Special Panel Discussions on the topics of “Film, Politics and Culture: How
Films Shape Political Beliefs” and “New Technologies for Acquisition and
Distribution.”

16th ALTER-NATIVE International Short Film Festival
The 16th ALTER-NATIVE International Short Film Festival will be held from 5 to 9th
of November 2008 in Tirgu Mures (Romania). The ALTER-NATIVE is one of the oldest and
the most important Romanian film festival presenting experimental, documentary,
animated and short fiction films.
The festival has no participation fee. Films submitted to the festival are to be
completed after January 1. 2006, not exceeding 30 minutes. An international jury
will present one major award (independent of category). The other prizes are yearly
changing.
The deadline for film submissions is 12 of September 2008.
Near the competition the festival include complementary programs like: future films,
the price wining films of the similar festivals, university students films,
video-installation exhibition, concerts, meetings and round table conversations for

GENERAL MOTORS drives your stories competition with FILMAKA
General Motors Corporation, the world's largest automobile
manufacturer, wants your pitches for shows that can feature some of
their new vehicles. They are not looking for a traditional
commercial, but instead for an engrossing story in which a GM vehicle
plays a memorable part. Viewers should connect with characters, and
through them with the vehicles they drive. Find the emotions that
will make viewers remember your film whenever they see these vehicles.
Think the Pontiac Firebird "Screaming Chicken" in Smokey & The
Bandit. Think the original Knight Rider Trans-Am. Think the Camaro
as Bumblebee in last summer's blockbuster Transformers. They are
extensions of the characters, or characters themselves.
Submit a detailed written synopsis of a film 3 to 5 minutes in length,
with 4 or 5 more episode ideas intended to total around 30 minutes of
original content. Include in your story one of the GM car models noted
below. Each episode should be able to live on its own and together
they should make a coherent half-hour story. Include in your
submission any other ideas you might have about production or how
these webisodes might utilize new technology or interactivity when
distributed. Be sure to bring your own aesthetic and stylization to

Sheffield Doc/Fest opens its films submissions
on Monday March 10.
Documentary films from established or debut filmmakers, television and film
school productions, and films of any style or subject are accepted for
consideration into 2008¹s official programme and/or into Doc/Fest¹s
digitized Videotheque.
Films can also be entered into the Grierson:Sheffield Innovation or Green
Award and films accepted into the official programme may also be nominated
for the Grierson:Sheffield Youth Jury award.
In 2007 over 1000 entries were received from all over the UK and the world.

SHORT FILM COMPETITION
Africa in Motion festival launches new short film
competition for emerging African filmmakers
across the continent
The Africa in Motion film festival (AiM), which takes place annually in
October at Edinburgh Filmhouse, is officially inviting African filmmakers
to submit short films for a new AiM competition. In order to target the
competition specifically towards young and emerging African talent,
filmmakers who enter a film for consideration must not have completed a
feature-length film previously. Films entered must have been completed in
2005 or after, and must be no longer than 30 minutes.
The competition winner will be selected from a shortlist of films and will
be announced at an awards ceremony at the third successive Africa in
Motion festival in October 2008. The winner will have the opportunity for
their film to be screened at AiM 2008 as well as the chance to win a
significant cash prize. A selection of other short films specially
commended by our competition jury will also be screened as part of a short
film showcase at AiM 2008.
The AiM 2008 Short Film Competition will be judged by a jury panel
consisting of local film specialists and established African filmmakers;
still to be confirmed.
The deadline for competition submissions is 31 May 2008, and following
from this a shortlist of films will be selected by an AiM viewing
committee. The shortlist will be announced in July 2008. These films will
then be viewed by all jury panel members, who will make a collective
decision as to the prizewinners, based on a point scoring system that will
take into account the relative merits of each of the shortlisted films.

A grand total of 24 UK Premieres have been announced as part of ¡Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival, a fiesta of film taking place at Cornerhouse, Manchester between Thursday 6 - Sunday 16 March 2008. Brand new productions arrive on British shores featuring the brightest directorial and acting talent from countries including Spain, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia and represent the cutting edge in Hispanic features, documentaries and shorts.
The 14th year of ¡Viva! bursts into life with the UK Premiere of BAJO LAS ESTRELLAS (UNDER THE STARS) (Thu 6 March) with director Félix Viscarret travelling to Manchester to introduce the heart-warming, and in places tragic, tale of Benito (Alberto San Juan), a drink-soaked musician returning to his small home town from a new life in Madrid. Faced with family tragedy, the most unlikely new relationships start to blossom.
DÉFICIT (Fri 14 & Sun 16 March), the directorial debut from acclaimed Mexican actor Gael García Bernal (THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN) also hits British screens for the first time at ¡Viva! Bernal explores issues of race, class and privilege via Cristobal, the spoiled son of wealthy parents who have fled corruption charges leaving their son in a hedonistic spiral. Drug problems, interrupted seductions and his friendship with an 'uppity' young gardener threaten to wreck his paradise.
Jonás Cuarón (son of Alfonso Cuarón, director of Y TU MAMA TAMBIÉN) makes a glowing debut with AÑO UÑA (THE YEAR OF THE NAIL) (Sat 15 & Sun 16 March). The director took a year's worth of personal photographs and assembled them into a fictitious narrative and the result is this lively and inventive coming of age tale centred around a young Mexican embarking on his first, doomed seduction. Award-winning actor Ricardo Darín (previously seen in 9 QUEENS) took over the reins to direct Argentine hit LA SEÑAL (Wed 12 & Sun 16 March) after the original director, Eduardo Mignona, died during pre-production. The result of his efforts is a moody, traditional noir. Set during the Peronista era, as Evita's life ebbs, the film recreates fifties Buenos Aires beautifully through colour-drained design and cinematography.
A clutch of Mexican firsts come courtesy of Ambulante, Mexico's annual touring documentary festival programmed by Canana, the production company run by Gael García Bernal, Pablo Cruz, and Diego Luna. From this year's selection of 4 films there is a look at a generation of thieves that were widely successful and equally notorious in 60s Mexico (LOS LADRONES VIEJOS: LAS LEYENDAS DEL ARTEGIO (THE OLD THIEVES: THE LEGENDS OF ARTEGIO) - Thu 13 & Sun 16 March) and an investigation into the murder of hundreds of women in Mexico's Ciudad Juárez through interviews with grieving parents, journalists and, most tellingly, female government officials (BAJO JUÁREZ: LA CUIDAD DEVORANDO A SUS HIJAS (THE CITY DEVOURING ITS DAUGHTERS) - Sun 9 & Wed 12 March).

to actively engage with an exciting and innovative selection of films.

The National Film Board and Hot Docs are now accepting proposals for the 2008 Doc Summit, which will take place on Friday, April 25, during the Hot Docs festival, conference and market.
We are calling on you to submit a short (one-page maximum) vision statement addressing your recommendations, policies or strategies for the Canadian documentary industry.
These statements should focus on preferred and realistic outcomes - rather than existing problems - and identify constructive and realistic solutions (i.e. what will our industry look like when it's working best). Statements might range from practical solutions for copyright issues to policy manifestos toward further building a vibrant documentary culture.
Selected statements will be presented by their authors at the Summit. Each presenter will be allotted 10 minutes to present their ideas, followed by a 15-20 minute moderated 'town hall' discussion. Key industry stakeholders will also be invited to respond to the various proposals.
Please refer to the Doc Summit Call for Proposals for complete submission guidelines and procedures. The deadline to receive submissions is Monday, March 3.

InSight – the London-based training organisation that Shooting People sponsors – is proud to announce that Rakhshan Bani- Etemad, Iran's leading woman filmmaker, will be coming to London in April to lead a free six-day filmmaking masterclass with twelve filmmakers on the subject of an outsider's view of London. The chosen filmmakers will then have the chance to have their films screened at the BFI Southbank as part of the BFI’s Bani-Etemad film season.
From the beginning Bani-Etemad has made films that are distinctive in their treatment of the problems facing Iranian society. She has made numerous documentaries but it is her hard hitting fiction films, such as ‘Nargess’, which focus on the daily struggles of mostly female protagonists against the backdrop of Modern Iran, that have grabbed the attention of the international audience.

The Auteurs
What started off on Facebook as a group for film lovers has involved into a fully-fledged website, that was launched at this year's Berlinale. Although it is still at a rudimentary development stage they already have a good selection of international independent feature and short films, covering everything from classics to documentaries, that can be watched online. It also has a forum and other ways for filmmakers and film lovers to interact.

Bypassing the hype, we are dedicated to unearthing established and emerging filmmakers. Yet The Auteurs' experience is not just about watching movies. Pangea Day
On May 10, 2008 - Pangea Day - people on each continent will stop, gather, and listen to each others' stories. Sites around the world will be video-conferenced live to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music. Thus, the Event seeks short films with extraordinary power which portray diverse parts of the world and create a cinematic view of the human experience that will make viewers laugh, cry, think, or question.
Official selections will be broadcast to the world via the internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones, and will later be included in the Pangea Day DVD. Accepted filmmakers receive a $3000 USD licensing fee, and will be considered for a special grant and awards program, in association with Participant Productions (AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, SYRIANA).
With its socially conscious mission to strengthen tolerance and compassion, Pangea Day has attracted major star support, including JJ Abrams (LOST, ALIAS), Lawrence Bender (KILL BILL), Judy McGrath of MTV Networks, Jeff Skoll of Ebay, Will.I.Am of The Black Eyed Peas, and actresses Goldie Hawn, Cameron Diaz, and Meg Ryan. New Big 5 Film Award hunts upcoming British Directors [Film, Commercial, TV]
Pinewood have joined four of the biggest names in British cinema, who are all donating their services and expertise, to offer an upcoming talented director the opportunity to make their first professional short film with the new John Brabourne Big 5 Award.
Created by the trade charity of the UK film and TV industry, the CTBF, a newly-established prestigious award named after one of Britain's most prolific producers aims to help galvanise the next generation of filmmakers in the UK and provide a launch platform for future British talent.
Valued at over £140K and offering invaluable experience, the prize includes over 100 minutes of 35mm film stock donated by Kodak, the hire of cameras and lighting by Arri Rental Group; studio space and audio post production by Pinewood Studios Group as well as lab costs, digital print and visual post production from Technicolor. Kaos Films will offer a winning script from their highly regarded British Short Screenplay Competition. Kaos Films will work with the winning director to produce the film and subsequently manage it on the festival circuit around the world following a BAFTA screening. The award is supported by Working Title Films, who will help select the final script and assist in funding the production.
The successful candidate will be presented with their award by Lord Attenborough at a high profile ceremony at St. James' Palace in London on June 25th. The film will be completed in time for the BAFTA screening in Spring 2009, where the next year's Big 5 Award will be announced.
John Brabourne was one of Britain's most prolific producers with an illustrious career spanning four decades and twenty seven films. John produced some of the greats of British cinema including Death on the Nile, Sink the Bismarck! at Pinewood Studios and HMS Defiant, The Mikado and A Passage to India at Shepperton Studios.

BAFTA-award winner and four times Oscar nominee, Branagh will be honoured with a season of films covering his career as actor and director. There will also be a Michael Palin retrospective featuring a variety of his writing and acting credits.
Running for 16 days at the National Media Museum, the Festival will be crammed with new releases, vintage classics, retrospectives, tributes and a glittering array of special guests. Barry Norman will be attending the Festival to talk about his career and there will be a season dedicated to the work of emerging German film maker, Christian Petzold, also due to visit Bradford.
For fans of film and music, there will be a series of features, documentaries and pop promos from pioneer of punk, Julien Temple. Composer Patrick Doyle will headline the Festival’s fourth Film and Music Conference. Doyle’s credits include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Calendar Girls and Gosford Park.
The Museum’s unique facilities allow the Festival to present films in every format from 16mm and 35mm to 70mm and 3-strip Cinerama. The 2008 line-up will once again include CineFile (documentaries on movies and movie-makers), the Widescreen Weekend, Premieres and Previews, the Industry Weekend and a second taste of Uncharted States of America, which celebrates new independent cinema from the US. The Shine Award will be presented to the best new short film selected from the hundreds of entries received each year.

FIRST LIGHT MOVIES AWARD
Next generation of filmmaking talent gets ready to shineBritain’s next generation of filmmakers, writers and actors have been nominated for the First Light Movies Awards 2008 - the UK's very own Mini Oscars®.
A galaxy of stars including Orlando Bloom, Sam Mendes, Kevin Spacey, Nira Park and Alan Rickman are to judge films made by young people from schools, youth groups and other organisations who are vying for awards in nine categories including Best Screenplay and Best Animation.
This year's crop of winners will be revealed during the awards ceremony, supported by the UK Film Council, at the ODEON Leicester Square on 4 March. The ceremony will be hosted by Big Brother presenter Davina McCall, who will be joined by a star-studded supporting cast of celebrity presenters.
First Light Movies provides funding and expertise to help five to 19-year-olds, throughout the UK from all backgrounds, create their own films using National Lottery money from the UK Film Council.
This year First Light Movies has teamed up with Virgin Media and FilmFlex to support the annual awards, to offer young filmmakers the opportunity to see their films on TV.
All of this year's First Light Movies Awards nominated films will be available for millions of homes across the UK through Virgin Media from 4 March.
Customers of Virgin Media are able to view the films, free of charge, through the FilmFlex service in Movies on Demand. Last year's First Light Movies Awards films have been seen more than 42,000 times since summer 2007 by Virgin Media customers.

Yes, that's possible with the European Spiritual Film Festival (ESFF), founded by French film director /producer and Viet Vo Daomaster, Marc Olivier Louveau a.k.a. LouMa Ho (His short movie, A Monk's Awakening, is still receiving awards in festivals around the world since 2005 !).

As a one-off special event, The Noble Sage is proud to invite Craig Jenkins to the ever-popular monthly film night at the gallery. Using his expert academic knowledge of Mehboob Khan’s classic cinematic masterpiece, ‘Mother India’ (1957), Craig Jenkins will be discussing the different meanings and representations of the role of ‘mother’ in the film.
Set to be a lively and enjoyable lecture for all adult audiences, Jenkins will be incorporating short scenes from the film into his lecture to elucidate this memorable and much cited Indian film. Afterwards, he will be inviting questions and answers from the audience so if there is a question you have been dying to ask about ‘Mother India’ – now is the chance!
Craig Jenkins is a highly qualified graduate in Drama and Film Studies who specialized in the representation of women in Hindi films, in particular Khan’s ‘Mother India’. Today he is a talented member of the Vayu Naidu Company that specializes in theatre and storytelling.

ESoDoc Target group: ESoDoc trains across the range of documentary film making, new media and participatory video. We are looking for documentary film makers who wish to work in the areas of human rights and environmental protection, often in the developing world and sometimes in collaboration with NGOs.
In addition, in 2008, we are keen to train NGO field workers or/and citizen activists who appreciate the value of film and want to learn how to make participatory videos and new media as part of their work. We intend to maintain a gender balance, a wide age spread, and representation from a large number of Euro countries, east and west.
Number of admitted participants: 22
Participation fee: 1.200€ (600€ for participants from new member countries).
Participation fee includes tuition, room and board for the entire course.
Sessions: ESoDoc offers three 1-week sessions held over a 6-month period, during which participants, either individually or in groups, develop a documentary film project in a stimulating intercultural environment. An e-platform and a tutor will support this work.- session 1: May 31 - June 6, 2008, Italy- session 2: July 19 – 25, 2008, Latvia- session 3: October 2008, Sweden(dates and venues could be subject to change)

Stephen Hart and Adriana Rouanet present & discuss new Latin American cinema. Is there just one Latin American cinema . . . or many “cinemas” made of sometimes contradictory currents that often collide?
Professor Stephen M. Hart teaches Latin American film and literature in the Department of Spanish American Studies and the Film Studies Programme at UCL. He has published widely on Latin American film and literature. He co-ordinates workshops on documentary film-making in Cuba at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños.
Adriana Rouanet is undertaking a PhD at King’s College, University of London , on Brazilian cinema during the dictatorship. She is Programmer for Cinema and Visual Arts at the Embassy of Brazil in London .

Atonement has received 14 nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2008. No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood have each received 9 nominations and La Vie en Rose has received 7.
The Bourne Ultimatum has 6 nominations, with American Gangster, The Lives of Others and Michael Clayton receiving 5 nominations each.
Atonement has been nominated in the categories Best Film, Best British Film, Director for Joe Wright, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy have been nominated for Leading Actress and Leading Actor, with Saoirse Ronan receiving a Supporting Actress nomination.
No Country for Old Men has received three performance nominations: Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones have both been nominated for Supporting Actor, with Kelly Macdonald nominated for Supporting Actress. The film’s other nominations are for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Sound, with the Coen brothers receiving a Director nomination.
Daniel Day-Lewis has been nominated for Leading Actor for his performance in There Will Be Blood, with a Supporting Actor nomination going to Paul Dano. The film also received nominations for Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography, Production Design and Sound.
La Vie en Rose has been nominated for Film Not in the English Language, Music, Production Design, Sound, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Marion Cotillard has been nominated for Leading Actress for her portrayal of Edith Piaf.
Paul Greengrass has been nominated for Director for The Bourne Ultimatum, which has also been nominated for Best British Film, Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Special Visual Effects.
American Gangster has been nominated for Best Film, Original Screenplay, Music, Cinematography and Editing.
George Clooney has received a nomination for Leading Actor for his portrayal of the title role in Michael Clayton, which was also nominated for Original Screenplay and Editing. Tom Wilkinson has received a Supporting Actor nomination and Tilda Swinton has been nominated for Supporting Actress for this film.
The Lives of Others has been nominated for Best Film and Film Not in the English Language, as well as receiving nominations for Director, Original Screenplay and Leading Actor for Ulrich Mühe.
Cate Blanchett has received nominations for both Supporting and Leading roles in I’m Not There and Elizabeth: The Golden Age respectively. Elizabeth: The Golden Age also received nominations for Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.
The remaining Leading Actress nominations go to Julie Christie for Away From Her and Ellen Page for Juno. Juno also received a nomination for Original Screenplay.
Viggo Mortensen has been nominated for Leading Actor for Eastern Promises, which has also been nominated as Best British Film. Philip Seymour Hoffman has received a Supporting Actor nomination for Charlie Wilson’s War.
Control has been nominated for Best British Film, with Samantha Morton nominated for Supporting Actress and writer Matt Greenhalgh has been nominated for The Carl Foreman Award.
The other nominees for The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Writer or Producer for their First Feature Film are Chris Atkins (Taking Liberties), Mia Bays (Scott Walker: 30 Century Man), Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and Andrew Piddington (The Killing of John Lennon).

The nominees for the Orange Rising Star Award, announced earlier this month, are Shia LaBeouf, Sienna Miller, Ellen Page, Sam Riley and Tang Wei. This audience award is voted for by the British public and presented to a young actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition.
The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 10 February at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. They will be hosted by Jonathan Ross for the second year running.

B3 FeatureLab is an innovative 12-month feature film development initiative created by B3 Media in partnership with the Binger Film Lab, Film4 and Skillset.
B3 FeatureLab aims to fast forward the filmmaking process for people who are ready to make the leap to a full-length feature film for commercial release. Not everyone will get that far but we’ll help you give it your best shot.
The B3 FeatureLab will kick off with a ‘discovery training week’ in London where you’ll develop a treatment and extended story outline. You’ll also get the chance to discuss your aspirations and hopes with executives from Film4, key industry figures and international filmmakers.
We’re particularly interested in writers, directors or writer/director teams, from black and minority ethnic backgrounds currently under-represented in film and TV. We’re also looking for talent from radio, TV, theatre and visual arts. If you understand the building blocks of drama and narrative and have something different to say, then we want to hear from you.
If you submit your idea, we’ll choose the ones to get hands-on support from some of the best film professionals around. Whether it’s script development, production, marketing or distribution, we’ll be covering all aspects of getting a feature film from idea to TV or the big screen.

BRITISH COUNCIL FILM OFFICE CLOSURE CAMPAIGN
Dear Members, Friends and Colleagues,
The New Producers Alliance is writing to voice it's concern at the current restructuring of the arts departments within the British Council and the consequent closure of the film department.
As you are probably well aware the British Council Film Department has provided essential services to the independent filmmaking community and it is out of respect for the work of the department that we are writing.The film department was already forced to take on a staff reduction last year so this would not appear to be an isolated attempt to dilute it's operations.
I would urge you to e-mail your concerns over the removal of the film department, the restructuring and the lack of public and industry consultation to martin.davidson@britishcouncil.org (CEO) and http://br.f608.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=venu.dhupa@britishcouncil.org (Head of Arts)

Richard Leacock To Receive Outstanding Achievement Award At Hot Docs 2008
Hot Docs, the major Canadian documentary festival, has announced that filmmaker Richard Leacock will be the recipient of its Outstanding Achievement Award, at this year's festival, running from 17th - 27th April. As part of the honour, the festival will screen a retrospective celebrating his triumphant career during the festival, now in its 15th edition.Hot Docs will also present its Doc Mogul Award, which is given to an individual who, over the course of his or her career, has made an essential contribution to the creative vitality of the documentary industry, both in their home countries and abroad. This year, Hot Docs will fete the BBC’s Nick Fraser for embodying all the qualities one would expect from a “doc mogulâ€. Leeds Young People's Film Festival
The 9th Leeds Young People's Film Festival is now accepting submissions for the 2008 Festival, taking place on 27th March - 4th April 2008.
We are now looking for exciting and innovative films made BY children and young people from across the UK. The films can be shorts in any genre (fiction, documentary, animation) and in any format. With an established reputation as the leading young people's Film Festival in the United Kingdom, we want films that will excite and motivate our audiences and that showcase the best and newest young filmmakers from around the UK.
NYFA (National Young Filmmakers' Award) is for short films made BY children and young people (up to 19 years old) in the UK. Selected films will be entered into competition where a jury comprising of young people and industry professionals will award £250 prizes to the chosen films in two age categories.
Deadline for entries is Friday 25th January 2008.

IndiePix Announces First Annual Nonfiction Filmmaking Awards
IndiePixFilms.com, the internet-based distributor of independent films, recently announced a collaboration with award-winning Producer, AJ Schnack, and Thom Powers, Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival, to present the first annual awards for ‘Excellence in Nonfiction Filmmaking’.
The nominees for the Outstanding Achievement Award, which will be chosen by a committee of established representatives from 12 top Film Festivals (see list below), will be announced at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2008 with the IndiePix Nonfiction Awards Ceremony to be held in New York City at the IFC Centre Cinema on March 18, 2008. The co-chairs of the event will be AJ Schnack, Producer/Director of the recent festival favourite "Kurt Cobain: About a Son", and Thom Powers, the Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as Curator/Host of the ‘Stranger than Fiction’ series.
In addition to the Outstanding Achievement Award, the Nonfiction Awards ceremony will acknowledge great achievement in specific crafts including Filmmaking, Producing, Editing and Cinematography. The nominating committee, which consists of 12 programmers from North America’s top film festivals, has identified eight categories of excellence (see list below) and 76 eligible films. Voting will take place over the four weeks from February 15 to March 15. The nominating committee will send invitations to hundreds of top filmmakers, distributors, programmers and writers asking them to participate in the voting process. Voting will be conducted by secure internet transaction on the IndiePixFilms.com website and the winners will be announced on March 18.
IndiePix, AJ Schnack and Thom Powers have joined forces because they recognise the need for such an award within the independent film community: “Rather than looking to outside groups for validation, this is an honour from within the community from voters who understand the intricacies involved in Nonfiction film production,” said Thom Powers, co-chair of the Nonfiction Film Awards.
AJ Schnack, Producer/Director, continued, "Many of us who are involved in Nonfiction filmmaking, and who are part of the process of presenting those films at the top festivals, are dismayed that craft in Nonfiction films is not explicitly recognised and honoured. We believe that the time is right to acknowledge the skill and innovation of filmmakers who go far beyond 'reality television' to bring us their understanding of the world and to recognise the vision and innovation of the filmmakers and craftspersons within the broad field of Nonfiction.

IndiePixFilms.com, the internet-based distributor of independent films, recently announced a collaboration with award-winning Producer, AJ Schnack, and Thom Powers, Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival, to present the first annual awards for ‘Excellence in Nonfiction Filmmaking’.
The nominees for the Outstanding Achievement Award, which will be chosen by a committee of established representatives from 12 top Film Festivals (see list below), will be announced at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2008 with the IndiePix Nonfiction Awards Ceremony to be held in New York City at the IFC Centre Cinema on March 18, 2008. The co-chairs of the event will be AJ Schnack, Producer/Director of the recent festival favourite "Kurt Cobain: About a Son", and Thom Powers, the Documentary Programmer of the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as Curator/Host of the ‘Stranger than Fiction’ series.
In addition to the Outstanding Achievement Award, the Nonfiction Awards ceremony will acknowledge great achievement in specific crafts including Filmmaking, Producing, Editing and Cinematography. The nominating committee, which consists of 12 programmers from North America’s top film festivals, has identified eight categories of excellence (see list below) and 76 eligible films. Voting will take place over the four weeks from February 15 to March 15. The nominating committee will send invitations to hundreds of top filmmakers, distributors, programmers and writers asking them to participate in the voting process. Voting will be conducted by secure internet transaction on the IndiePixFilms.com website and the winners will be announced on March 18.
IndiePix, AJ Schnack and Thom Powers have joined forces because they recognise the need for such an award within the independent film community: “Rather than looking to outside groups for validation, this is an honour from within the community from voters who understand the intricacies involved in Nonfiction film production,” said Thom Powers, co-chair of the Nonfiction Film Awards.

We believe that the time is right to acknowledge the skill and innovation of filmmakers who go far beyond 'reality television' to bring us their understanding of the world and to recognise the vision and innovation of the filmmakers and craftspersons within the broad field of Nonfiction.

The Latest Word / Negotiations Update From DGA
“Today the WGA filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board against the AMPTP for its refusal to bargain in good faith with the WGA. It is a clear violation of federal law for the AMPTP to issue an ultimatum and break off negotiations if we fail to cave to their illegal demands.
We are in the midst of the holiday season, with thousands of our members and the membership of other unions out of work. It is the height of irresponsibility and intransigence for the AMPTP to refuse to negotiate a fair agreement with the WGA. We reiterate our demand that the AMPTP immediately return to the negotiations, rather than going on vacation, so that this town can be put back to work.
The DGA announced today that it may commence negotiations with the AMPTP in January. The DGA has to do what is best for its membership, and we will do what is best for ours. We wish them well, but they do not represent writers. Our strike will end when the companies return to negotiations and make a fair deal with the WGA.”

BFM (Black Filmmaker) are pleased to announce the formal appointment of NADIA DENTON as Festival Director of the 10th bfm International Film Festival, London. The Festival is the largest black world cinema event in the UK and was established to create a platform and exposure for new audiences to this work. Over the years the festival has attracted black Hollywood (Billy Dee Williams, Eriq La Salle) as well as UK talents such as Eammon Walker, Idris Elba and Marianne Jean Baptiste.

Calling film-makers across the south west
Budding film-makers from Cornwall to Worcestershire are invited to submit their work to the 2008 Viewfinder Film Festival.
Since the festival was launched in Gloucestershire in 2004, hundreds of short films have been sent in from primary school pupils, community groups, university students and professionals, and now organisers are extending the call for entries to the wider south west region for the 2008 event.
Films can be up to 15 minutes in length and fit into the categories of drama, animation, documentary, experimental or music video. Submissions are invited in a number of categories: ages 7-14; 15 - 18; 18 and over in education; non-professional and professional.
The festival will take place between 7 – 12 April 2008 and screenings will take place at Cineworld in Cheltenham and venues throughout the region.

Russell Brand helped to celebrate the amazing achievements of nine young people who were funded by Mediabox. As part of this award ceremony at the end of November, all documentaries were showcased. Georgina Studd, aged 17 from South London, picked up the highest accolade at the 2007 Mediabox and Channel 4 FourDocs Documentary Film-making Competition for her short film, Georgina Goes Out*.
